Repair the boot zip without changing shoes

A faulty zipper can make it difficult to put on a boot that is still in good condition. If it pulls, gets stuck or reopens, forcing it doesn't help to understand the problem. Let's check where the closure gives way: slider, teeth, graft, tape or seam that joins it to the upper.

We also check if the defect only appears when the boot is worn. In that case it is useful to evaluate the tension exerted on the zip, as well as the condition of the mechanism. The intervention may concern a component, the fixing or the complete hinge. The goal is to put your shoes back into use with work suited to their construction, preserving what still works: changing a closure does not mean redoing the entire boot.

Zip, upper and lining: a repair made by shoemakers

The zipper is sewn to the shoe and works together with the materials surrounding it. To choose the spare part we evaluate length, tooth size, colour, slider and fixing method. The replacement must be adapted to the upper and lining, also checking the state of the existing seams.

On a high boot the access and development of the zip is different than on a boot. Skin, suede and synthetic materials also require you to check how the edge has held up to use. If the tape has torn, or the material near the closure is damaged, the estimate must also consider that damage.

When only one boot is defective, we evaluate the individual repair and the combination with the other. We will point out any differences in the finish of the spare part before proceeding. However, if the zip is healthy but the boot is tight, replacement alone does not resolve the issue fit: must be evaluated separately.

1. Can I have the zipper of just one boot repaired?

Yes, the quote can concern a single boot. Specify which zip is damaged and send a photo of the pair. We also evaluate the finish compared to the other boot and we will tell you if it is useful to deliver both, even if only working on one.

2. Do you change the zip on high boots and low ankle boots?

You can request an evaluation for both. Zip length, seam access, and shoe construction change the amount of work needed. In the message it indicates the type of shoe and shows the entire closure, not just the damaged part.

3. The zipper opens behind the slider: is it enough to change it?

This may be sufficient if the problem is with the slider and the teeth and belt are intact. However, a check is needed: a similar defect can also depend on the closure or the tension during use. Avoid tightening the slider with pliers before evaluating.

4. If only the zipper breaks, do I need a new zip?

Not automatically. The zipper puller is the tab you grip, while the slider is the component that holds the teeth together. Photograph them closely - we can assess which part is damaged and whether the rest of the zipper can be preserved.

5. Will the new zip be identical to the one on the other boot?

We evaluate the replacement for functionality, size and finish. Aesthetic identity cannot be guaranteed prior to checking available components. If a different replacement is needed, we will point out the proposed solution and the differences compared to the other boot.

6. Does replacing the zip make the boot wider on the calf?

This is not the purpose of the replacement. If the closure works under strong tension because the boot tightens, tell us: the fit requires a separate evaluation. Changing the zip without considering that problem could leave the new zip in the same conditions of use.

7. How much does it cost to repair a boot zipper?

It depends on the intervention, the length of the closure and the work on the upper and lining. The quote must specify whether it concerns a single boot or a pair. Any collection and return costs are communicated together with the logistics methods.

8. How long does it take and what photos should I send?

We confirm the times after evaluating workmanship and spare parts. Send pair, full zip, damage detail and inside of shoe. If you have a date by which you need the boots, write it down immediately, before arranging delivery or shipping.

9. Does the repair also include the sole and heel?

This sheet is about the hinge and the agreed work to restore it. Sole, heel and other interventions on the shoe are not automatically included. If you want to evaluate multiple repairs, photograph them in the same request: they will be indicated separately in the estimate.
